Planning a wedding is probably one of the most complicated events you will ever need to organise. Nothing else will have such a long build up, and then be over within 24 hours (although the marriage should last longer!). When you think of all the things you need to decide on, arrange, book and shop for, your wedding dress is probably high on your agenda, while the wedding ring is usually considered almost an after thought. Well, it shouldn’t be!
Your wedding rings are a lasting symbol of the love and commitment you have made to each other. A symbol which is understood all around the world, they give a message to everyone you meet. Simply by wearing a band on a certain finger, people may treat you slightly differently…they can tell straight away that you have given your heart to another. What’s more, you will be wearing it every day for the rest of your life, so it needs to go with every outfit in your wardrobe. When you think of them like that, choosing a wedding ring becomes a much more important decision!
So, where to start?! There are so many different styles and metals to choose from, so we have put together a list of things to keep in mind when you are looking for that all important wedding band.
- Now is not the time to choose something that doesn’t fit in with your personal style and personality, so try to imagine yourself wearing each ring in your casual clothes, and work clothes as well as your wedding dress.
- As with every aspect of wedding planning, always keep in mind your budget.
- Think about your lifestyle. If you use your hands a lot you might want to think twice about choosing a wedding ring studded with precious stones as they will be more likely to fall out.
- Don’t leave it to the last minute! It probably won’t be as easy as you think and you may even need to have them made to order (not as expensive as you might think if you choose the right jeweller). You don’t want to make a rushed decision and settle for a ring that you are not totally in love with – you will hopefully be wearing it for a long time!
- Research jewellers before you hit the shops. Wherever you live there is bound to be a wide selection – some will even come to you at home, and don’t forget the internet. This will enable you to see lots of different styles and their varying prices before you have to make a decision.
- Think timeless and classic. Anything too fashionable will date quickly and you may find yourself wanting another ring in a few years time!
- If you fancy something totally unique and personal, then why not design your own rings and have them professionally made.
- If you intend to wear them both together, make sure that your wedding band fits on your finger with your engagement ring.
- Don’t forget insurance! Shockingly, 25% of newlyweds lose their ring during the first five years of marriage.
- Many brides have their wedding dress in mind when shopping for a ring. Don’t! You will only be wearing them together for one day, it is much more important that the ring suits the rest of your wardrobe.
